Peter Obi Declares ‘Nigeria Is At War,’ Urges Tinubu to Prioritize Security Over Infrastructure Amid Rising Fatalities
Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has issued a stark declaration, asserting that Nigeria is “at war” and calling on President Bola Tinubu to immediately re-prioritize national security over ongoing infrastructure projects. Obi’s urgent appeal follows the brutal killing of over 100 people, including military personnel, in Zamfara State by suspected terrorists.
In a poignant statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Obi described the escalating violence as a situation “beyond politics,” warning that “the soul of our nation is bleeding.” He emphasized that the current trajectory is unsustainable.
“With the brutal killings of over 100 people in Zamfara, including our revered military men, Mr. President, it is time to accept the inevitable truth and act decisively. Nigeria is at war. We can no longer afford the dangerous denial,” Obi stated unequivocally.
The former Anambra State governor expressed profound concern over the alarming frequency of violent deaths plaguing the country. He drew a grim comparison, noting that the rate of fatalities in Nigeria now mirrors, and in some cases even surpasses, that of countries officially embroiled in armed conflict.
“The number of lives lost in Nigeria now mirrors countries at war, and the death in our own country even happens more often than in countries at war,” he lamented.
Obi stressed that the focus of governance must shift fundamentally towards the preservation of human lives, rather than the pursuit of symbolic achievements. He urged the administration to move away from “cutting ribbons and headlining ceremonies on front pages” and instead channel all efforts and resources into securing the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians. His call highlights a growing national anxiety over pervasive insecurity, urging a paradigm shift in the government’s strategic priorities.
